The dark entity remained sealed, but its voice echoed through the gate. Captain Elena Vasquez stood on the bridge of the Odyssey, listening to its desperate pleas.

"Free me," it whispered. "I am not what the First Ones said."

"Command, this is Vasquez. The entity is trying to communicate."

"Copy, Odyssey. Do not engage."

The Luminari leader appeared beside her. "It is dangerous. It lies."

"But what if it doesn't?" Elena asked.

She led an away team to the prison ring. The entity's form flickered within.

"Tell me your story," Elena said.

"I was the First Ones' advisor. I helped them build the gates. But they grew afraid of my power. They trapped me here."

"Why should I believe you?"

The entity showed her visions-the First Ones' rise, their fear, their betrayal.

"They were wrong to imprison me."

Elena looked at her crew, at the future, at the choice.

"We need proof," she said.

The Builder interfaced with the prison's records. "The entity is telling the truth."

"Then we free it."

The Builder deactivated the prison. The entity emerged, its form solid, its eyes kind.

"Thank you," it said. "I will not forget this."

"What will you do now?" Elena asked.

"I will help you. The universe is vast. There is much to explore."

The entity joined the alliance, sharing its knowledge, its power, its wisdom.

The universe was vast.

But now, it was united.

And humanity had found a new friend.

The end.

Sergeant Major Robert "Bob" Henderson had kept every promise he ever made.

Fifty-three years of marriage. Three deployments. Two wars. One woman.

Now he sat in a hospital room, holding her hand. Machines beeped softly. The morning light was gentle, the kind Clara always loved.

"Bob," she whispered, her voice thin.

"I'm here."

"You promised me something. A long time ago."

He nodded, eyes wet. "I remember."

When he was twenty-two, shipping out to Vietnam, Clara had cried at the airport. He'd held her face and said, "I'll come back. And when we're old, I'll hold your hand every single day until you get sick of me."

She'd laughed through her tears. "I'll never get sick of you."

Fifty-three years later, he still held her hand.

"You kept your promise," she said softly.

"You kept yours too." He kissed her fingers. "You never got sick of me."

A small smile. "Don't push it."

He laughed quietly. Outside, the world went on. Inside, time slowed to just them.

That night, Clara fell asleep with his hand in hers.

And in the morning, when he woke up, she was gone.

But he still held her hand. For a long time.

Some promises aren't meant to be broken. Even when it hurts to keep them.
